Is a heat pump hot water system worth it on the Gold Coast?

For most 3+ person Gold Coast households, yes. The federal STC rebate cuts the install cost significantly, daily running cost is roughly 40-60% less than gas continuous flow, and payback on the install cost differential is 2-4 years. After payback, you keep saving for the unit's 10-15 year life.

Heat pump hot water systems have become our most-recommended replacement on the Gold Coast over the last 3-5 years. The economics genuinely favour them for typical household sizes, the federal STC rebate makes the install cost competitive with gas continuous flow, and Gold Coast electricity rates (when combined with the heat pump's high coefficient of performance) deliver running costs well below any gas alternative.

How a heat pump works

A heat pump hot water system uses the same fridge-in-reverse technology as your home air conditioner. It extracts heat from the surrounding air and concentrates it into the water tank. For every 1 kWh of electricity it consumes, it delivers roughly 3-4 kWh of heat into the water, called the coefficient of performance (COP). That is 3-4x better than an electric resistance element which delivers exactly 1 kWh of heat per 1 kWh of electricity.

The real Gold Coast running cost numbers

A typical 3-4 person Gold Coast household uses 150-200 litres of hot water per day. Running costs at 2026 tariffs:

  • Heat pump: $200-300 per year
  • Gas continuous flow (natural gas): $480-680 per year
  • LPG continuous flow (acreage / hinterland): $700-1,000 per year
  • Gas storage: $600-900 per year (standing pilot losses)
  • Electric storage: $800-1,200 per year

Over the 10-15 year lifespan of a heat pump, savings versus gas continuous flow are roughly $3,000-5,500, versus electric storage $6,000-10,000.

The federal STC rebate

The federal Small-Scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme provides an automatic rebate at install time for any qualifying heat pump. Currently the rebate is worth $1,000-1,800 off the install price depending on the unit's STC rating and the spot STC price. The rebate is applied directly to your invoice by us, you do not file paperwork.

Install cost comparison

  • Heat pump (Sanden, Reclaim, iStore), supply and install after STC rebate: $3,600-5,800 out of pocket
  • Gas continuous flow (Rinnai Infinity 26 or equivalent): $2,200-3,200
  • Like-for-like gas storage replacement: $2,000-3,000
  • Like-for-like electric storage replacement: $1,400-2,200

Heat pump install cost is typically $1,400-2,500 more than gas continuous flow like-for-like, but the running cost savings pay this back in 2-4 years and then keep saving for the unit life.

When a heat pump is NOT the right answer

  1. Very high simultaneous demand households. 5+ people, multiple simultaneous showers, very high daily usage. Heat pump recovery rate can lag at extreme peaks. Gas continuous flow wins on endless hot water at full flow.
  2. No suitable outdoor location. Heat pumps need outdoor airflow on at least three sides, away from windows (compressor noise). Most properties have a suitable location but some apartment units and tightly-packed townhouses do not.
  3. Off-grid acreage with limited solar capacity. Rare on the Gold Coast but possible. If you do not have grid power and your solar PV is undersized, the heat pump's electricity demand may stress the system.
  4. Very short term ownership. If you are selling in under 3 years, you will not see the payback, but the upgraded HWU is a selling point.

Heat pump + PV solar = near-zero running cost

If you have solar PV, the heat pump becomes even cheaper. Set the heat pump to run during peak solar production (mid-morning to early afternoon) and the electricity it uses comes free from your panels. Annual running cost drops from $200-300 to under $50 for most households. We can wire in a timer at install for $80-150.

Lifespan and warranty

Heat pumps last 10-15 years on the Gold Coast (the compressor is the main wear part). Most major brands offer 6-10 year warranties on the tank and 3-7 years on the compressor. Quality install matters, an undersized or poorly-located unit fails earlier.

Brands we install

Sanden Eco, Reclaim Energy, iStore. All have strong service support in Australia, all qualify for the federal STC rebate. We will quote with realistic 10-15 year cost projections so you can compare versus your current setup.

Detailed brand comparison for typical Gold Coast install

The three heat pump brands we install most often, what each does well, what to be aware of:

Sanden Eco

Japanese-built. CO2 refrigerant (significantly lower global warming potential than typical R134a or R410a). Split system (tank inside or in laundry, compressor outside) gives more install flexibility. Typical 12-15 year compressor life. Tank warranty 6 years. Higher upfront cost ($5,200-5,800 after rebate) but excellent long-term reliability. Best for households who want premium reliability and minimum environmental footprint.

Reclaim Energy

Australian-built. CO2 refrigerant. Integrated unit (tank and compressor in one). Strong supplier support network. 10-13 year compressor life. Tank warranty 7 years. Mid-tier pricing ($4,200-4,800 after rebate). Best for households wanting Australian build with strong warranty terms.

iStore

Australian-assembled. R410A refrigerant (standard). Integrated unit. Competitive pricing ($3,600-4,200 after rebate). 10-12 year compressor life. Tank warranty 5-7 years. Best for households on budget who still want federal STC rebate eligibility and proper warranty support.

Solar PV integration, how it actually works

If you have solar PV (or are planning to add it), the heat pump can run on free electricity during peak production. Practical setup options:

  • Simple timer: $80-150 install. Set the heat pump to run between 10am-2pm when PV production peaks. Most common approach. Catches 60-80% of typical usage.
  • Solar diverter: $400-800 install. Senses excess PV being exported to the grid, automatically routes it to the heat pump or boost element. Captures more solar but more complex.
  • Home energy management system: $1,500-3,500 install. Manages multiple loads (heat pump, pool pump, EV charger) based on solar availability. Whole-home approach.

For a typical household with 6.6 kW PV system, running the heat pump on solar drops the annual electricity for hot water to under $50. Combined with the install rebate, total 10-year cost of hot water is roughly $4,000-5,000 versus $10,000+ for gas storage equivalent.

Common heat pump install issues and how we avoid them

Heat pump installs done poorly fail early. The five mistakes we see in failed installs from other operators:

  1. Undersized for household: 250L tank installed for a 5-person household, recovery cannot keep up with morning peak. Result, cold showers and customer dissatisfaction. Fix, size at quote stage based on actual household demand.
  2. Poor location for compressor: against a south-facing recessed corner with no airflow. Result, reduced efficiency and possible safety cut-out in cold weather. Fix, position with 600mm clearance on three sides minimum.
  3. Inadequate condensate drainage: heat pump produces condensate during operation, needs proper drainage to a tundish or external grate. Poor drainage = water pooling around unit. Fix, plumb condensate properly at install.
  4. Electrical supply not upgraded: some heat pumps need a 20A or 25A dedicated circuit, exceeding what an old electric storage circuit supplied. Result, breaker tripping. Fix, electrician upgrades the circuit during install.
  5. No commissioning report: heat pump needs proper commissioning to verify it cycles properly and meets STC scheme requirements. Fix, we commission and document every install.

Heat pump vs gas continuous flow, the head-to-head

For households genuinely torn between these two options:

FactorHeat pumpGas continuous flow
Install cost (after rebate)$3,600-5,800$2,200-3,200
Annual running cost (3-4 person)$200-300$480-680
Lifespan10-15 years12-15 years
Simultaneous shower capacity2-33-4
Cold water inlet sensitivityLow (heats from tank)Higher in winter
PV solar pairingExcellentNot applicable
Indoor space neededOutdoor unit + tank spaceOutdoor wall mount
Noise50-55 dB at 1m (compressor)Silent at idle, low operating noise
10-year total cost~$6,500~$8,500

For most Gold Coast households heat pump wins on 10-year total cost. Gas continuous flow wins on simultaneous capacity for very high-demand households. Other factors (noise, space, environmental considerations) sometimes tip the decision.

The federal STC rebate timing

The STC scheme is phasing down. Each year the deeming period shortens by one year, reducing the rebate value by roughly $100-200 per install. The full scheme is currently scheduled to end around 2030. Doing your heat pump install in 2026 captures more rebate than waiting until 2027 or 2028.

If you are on the fence about timing, the rebate phase-down is a real reason to act sooner rather than later. The phase-down does not affect the running cost economics (which favour heat pump regardless), only the install cost differential.
