Gas cooktop installs are one of the most common gas fitting jobs we run on the Gold Coast. The cost depends on whether you already have a gas line to the cooktop position, or whether the install is the first gas appliance in the kitchen (which involves running a new gas point).
The price ranges, 2026 Gold Coast
- Like-for-like swap (existing gas line, replacement cooktop): $260-480
- New gas point (no existing line, run from main): $480-820 plus compliance
- Conversion from electric cooktop to gas (gas point + electrical capping + new cooktop install): $580-1,100 plus electrician sub-cost
- Conversion from gas cooktop to induction (gas capping certificate): $260-440 plus electrician sub-cost
- Multiple-appliance kitchen reno (cooktop + oven + HWU swap): $1,400-2,800 typical
What is included in the install
- Licensed gas fitter on-site (QBCC plus QLD gas work authorisation)
- Removal and disconnection of old cooktop (if replacement)
- Cap or extend existing gas line as needed
- Installation of appliance regulator
- Isolation valve at the appliance
- Leak test with manometer
- Written gas compliance certificate at completion
- Copy registered with the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorate as required
- Workmanship guarantee
The gas compliance certificate, not optional
Every gas job in Queensland, no matter how small, requires a gas compliance certificate from a licensed gas fitter. That includes a like-for-like cooktop swap. The certificate is your legal proof that the install was done properly and meets code. Unlicensed installs (DIY or unqualified handyman work) are illegal, create legal liability for you as the homeowner, and void most home insurance in the event of a gas-related incident.
We issue the compliance certificate at completion as part of every gas job, no extra charge. Keep the certificate, you may need it for insurance claims or eventual sale of the house.
Why a like-for-like swap still needs compliance
Even if you are replacing your old gas cooktop with the exact same model, the law requires a licensed gas fitter to do the install and issue a compliance certificate. The reason is that every install involves disconnecting and reconnecting gas, leak-testing, and confirming the new appliance is properly fitted, all things that need a licensed trade for safety. There is no DIY path on gas work in Queensland.
What costs extra
- Gas line upgrade. If your existing line is undersized for the new cooktop's gas demand, a line upgrade adds $200-600 typically.
- Cabinetry adjustment. Some cooktops need bench cut-outs adjusted to fit the new dimensions. We handle the gas side, your cabinetmaker handles the timber.
- Ventilation upgrade. AS5601 requires minimum ventilation for gas cooktops. If your kitchen rangehood is recirculating-only or undersized, an upgrade may be needed. We will check at quote stage.
- Electrical work. Some gas cooktops have electric ignition and need a power point. If absent, an electrician adds $200-500.
Common scenarios on the Gold Coast
Kitchen reno, replacing gas cooktop with premium gas model
$280-480 for the install plus the cooktop itself (you source). Quick job, usually 2-4 hours on-site. Common premium brands include Smeg, Asko, Ilve, Bosch, Westinghouse. We install whatever you specify.
Switching from electric cooktop to induction (induction is electric, not gas)
If you had a gas cooktop, we cap the gas line with a compliance certificate ($260-440), then the electrician handles the induction electrical install (often a panel upgrade is needed for the higher current draw of induction). Total cost typically $700-1,400 including the electrician.
Switching from induction back to gas (uncommon but happens)
Run a new gas point to the kitchen ($480-820), install the gas cooktop ($280-480), electrician caps the induction circuit ($200-400). Total typically $1,000-1,700.
Apartment kitchen install
Apartment installs require body corp notification (sometimes formal approval) and access overhead adds slightly to the cost. $280-460 for like-for-like apartment cooktop swap. Some apartment buildings have no reticulated gas, in which case induction is the only option.
How long does the install take
Like-for-like swap, 2-4 hours on-site, you can use the cooktop the same day. New gas point install, 4-8 hours depending on line length and access. Multi-appliance kitchen renos coordinated with other trades, scheduled around your tiler, electrician and cabinetmaker.
Brand-by-brand cooktop install nuances we see on Gold Coast kitchens
The cooktop brand affects install complexity more than most homeowners expect. Smeg gas cooktops use standard 1/2 inch BSP gas connections and are straightforward, 2-3 hours on site for a like-for-like swap. Ilve and Bertazzoni Italian cooktops sometimes use metric M20 or M22 fittings that need an adapter, adds 30-45 minutes and $40-80 in parts. Asko cooktops have specific clearance requirements above and beside the unit that need verifying against the existing benchtop cut-out, sometimes the cabinet cut-out needs trimming by your cabinetmaker before we can fit. Westinghouse and Bosch are reliable mainstream installs with no surprises. Miele cooktops require a 25mm clearance specification that some Gold Coast benchtops cannot accommodate, we have had to refuse installs where the homeowner did not check the spec sheet before ordering. La Cornue and Lacanche range cookers (uncommon but seen on premium Mermaid Beach and Hope Island kitchens) are a specialist install, $800-1,400 just for the gas connection due to multiple appliance valves, larger gas line requirements and longer commissioning time. Always send us the cooktop spec sheet at quote stage so we can check clearances, gas connection type and any unusual requirements before quoting.
The ventilation rule that catches a lot of Gold Coast kitchens
AS5601 requires gas cooktops to have either a rangehood ducted to outside or sufficient passive ventilation in the kitchen. A lot of Gold Coast apartments and townhouses have recirculating rangehoods (carbon filter only, no external duct) which technically do not satisfy the ventilation requirement for gas cooktops. The install can still go ahead in many cases because alternative ventilation routes count (open kitchen plans connecting to other ventilated spaces, large windows that open, mechanical ventilation in the unit), but we have to assess and document the ventilation as part of the compliance certificate. On a few jobs we have had to refuse the gas cooktop install entirely because the kitchen was a sealed island with no external venting available, the homeowner had to choose between adding a ducted rangehood ($1,200-2,800 install with a roof or wall penetration) or switching to induction. Check your ventilation before ordering a gas cooktop, especially in apartments and tightly enclosed kitchen layouts. We can assess at quote stage and tell you what is needed.
The induction-to-gas reverse switch that has become more common
For the last decade the move was overwhelmingly gas-to-induction, partly aesthetics, partly the assumption that induction was the future. In the last 18 months we have seen the reverse switch happen, induction-back-to-gas. The drivers vary. Some homeowners discovered induction does not work with cast-iron pans and aluminium cookware they wanted to keep. Some discovered the response time at low simmer is poor on cheaper induction units. Some moved into a property with induction and missed the visible flame and instant heat response of gas. The reverse switch costs more than you might expect. We need to run a new gas point if there is no existing gas in the kitchen ($480-820), install the new gas cooktop ($280-480), and the electrician needs to cap the dedicated 32-amp circuit that was feeding the induction ($200-400). Total cost typically $1,000-1,700 plus the new cooktop itself. Worth doing if you genuinely prefer gas cooking, but we always ask homeowners to reconfirm the decision before we run the gas line, because reversing again is another $1,500.
Multi-appliance kitchen renos, the sequencing that saves you money
Kitchen renos involving cooktop, oven, gas point and HWU swap should be sequenced as a single gas job rather than three separate visits. A typical kitchen reno gas scope (new gas cooktop, new gas wall oven, relocated HWU) done as separate visits is $480 plus $380 plus $640 equals $1,500 in gas fitter callout-and-labour fees. The same work bundled as a single coordinated visit is $1,100-1,400 total because we set up once, leak-test once at the end, and issue a single compliance certificate covering the whole scope. The catch is the rest of your kitchen reno (electrician, cabinetmaker, tiler, plasterer) needs to be sequenced so we can do our work in one block. We coordinate with your builder or kitchen project manager to nail the timing. If your reno is owner-managed we will help you plan the sequence, our typical slot is after rough-in electrical and before benchtop install. Saving $400-700 on the gas scope is worth a small amount of sequencing effort.
Apartment cooktop installs, the body corp and building manager realities
Apartment kitchen installs in Surfers, Broadbeach, Main Beach and the high-rise corridors come with extra coordination overhead that affects timing and sometimes cost. The body corporate typically requires notification before any gas work, with some buildings requiring formal approval (a few weeks lead time) and an insurance certificate of currency from the gas fitter. The building manager often needs to be on site to provide access to common gas isolation points, gas riser cupboards, and lift bookings for materials. Some older Surfers buildings have shared gas risers where isolating gas to one unit means isolating gas to multiple units, scheduling has to align with other residents. A few high-rise buildings have removed gas reticulation entirely during recent renovations and any cooktop install in those buildings must be induction or electric. We attend pre-quote site visits for apartment work to confirm gas availability, building requirements and access constraints before committing to a date. Apartment installs typically run $80-200 more than equivalent house installs because of the additional coordination time.
What you should know about cooktop warranty and installer responsibility
Most premium cooktop brands (Smeg, Ilve, Miele, Asko, Bosch, Westinghouse) include manufacturer warranty of 2-5 years on parts and labour. The warranty is conditional on the appliance having been installed by a licensed gas fitter with a valid compliance certificate. An unlicensed install voids the warranty automatically. A licensed install but without retained compliance documentation can cause warranty claim difficulties (the manufacturer may request proof of compliant install). We register the cooktop warranty in your name at install time, lodge the install detail with the manufacturer, and email you copies of both the compliance certificate and the warranty registration. Two years later when something fails (ignition switch, knob, burner cap) you have everything you need to make a warranty claim without searching through paperwork. The 10-minute admin overhead on our end saves the homeowner $200-500 in out-of-pocket replacement costs across the warranty period.
